As the communist system collapsed, millions of people nearly lost their jobs and fell into poverty. During this uncertain time, Dr. Anatoly Kashpirovsky captivated 240 million viewers across the Soviet bloc with his televised healing sessions. Some considered him a saint; others, a charlatan. Either way, he became the most influential media figure of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The film explores how faith is formed in times of crisis and how mass influence spreads. “KASHPIROVSKY - UNDER THE SPELL” is a documentary film about this legendary hypnotist. To date, no film has been made that comprehensively tells his story, as well as the broader sociocultural and political context and his influence on the history and transformation of the 1990s.
