The Consequences of Truth tells the astonishing story of Alfred Wetzler, the forgotten hero who escaped from Auschwitz and wrote a report that helped to save the lives of 200 thousand Hungarian Jews.
In 1944, Alfred Wetzler escapes from Auschwitz with Rudolf Vrba, aiming to persuade the Allies to bomb the camp. Their report, known as The Auschwitz Protocol, provides the first precise account of the Nazi extermination plan and sparks international outrage, helping halt the deportations from Budapest and saving around 200,000 Hungarian Jews. After the war, Wetzler joins the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia but is implicated in an antisemitic trial, narrowly avoiding imprisonment. In 1964, he testifies at the Frankfurt Auschwitz Trial against former SS guards. After the Soviet invasion, he is placed under surveillance by the secret police and withdraws from public life. Alfred Wetzler dies in 1988 in Bratislava.
