Viki, a young clerk, joins the Prague welfare offices convinced that empathy and personal commitment can make a difference. In the Financial Assistance Department, she learns from experienced colleagues, worn down by years of demanding work without psychological support or adequate pay, and sustained by dark humour. Together, they make daily decisions that determine whether people can pay their rent or survive another month. Through Viki’s eyes, we enter a world of failing bureaucracy, where the state seems to fight the poor rather than poverty itself. But can the system be changed from within, or will it break her first? And the closer Viki gets to the people on the other side of the counter, the harder it becomes to remain just an employee.
