Thaddeas, an orphan in 18th-century Vienna, joins eccentric scientist Prokop Divisch on a royal mission to a Moravian village plagued by yearly fires. Empress Maria Theresa has ordered Divisch to test his Machina Meteorologica, an invention designed to tame lightning. After an accident destroys their equipment, Thaddeas rallies the villagers to rebuild the machine and grows close to Apolena, the blacksmith's spirited daughter. But the local Vicar, fearing science will undermine his authority, turns the village against them and sabotages their success. As a violent storm approaches and the Empress arrives to inspect their work, Thaddeas, Divisch and Apolena must expose the Vicar, unite the villagers and prove that curiosity, courage and science can triumph over fear and superstition.
