Four Czech Films Supported by Eurimages

Two feature films and two documentaries with Czech participation received grants from Eurimages Fund.  Feature project Outside directed by Michal Hogenauer, In the Beat of a Heart by Romanian director Tudor Giurgiu and the documentaries Fugue by director and producer Artemio Benki and Frem directed by Viera Čákanyová were supported. 

The Board of Management of the Council of Europe's Eurimages Fund at the meeting held from 16 to 20 October 2017 agreed to support 22 fiction, 7 documentary and 1 animation projects at a total amount of €5,598,535.

A CERTAIN KIND OF SILENCE
Feature project A Certain Kind of Silence directed by Michal Hogenauer received € 120,000 and is shot in the coproduction of the Czech Republic (Petr Oukropec, Pavel Strnad - Negativ), Latvia (Aija Berzina - Tasse Films) and the Netherlands (Stienette Bosklopper, Lisette Kelder  - Circe Films). The film was supported by the Czech Film Fund.

Synopsis:
Mia (23) arrives abroad to work as an au pair for a well-off family living in a lavish villa and is accepted into the upper class. Mia has to look after the seemingly autistic Sebastian (10). At one social event, she attends with the family, Mia accidentally witnesses one of the adults beating a little boy with a thin wooden cane while the boy remains silent and controlled. The next day, the strange memory feels like a dream and her main concern is building a relationship with Sebastian. But one day she is told that if she wants to stay, she, too, must physically punish Sebastian to show her love for him.

SOLO
Documentary Solo, directed by Artemio Benki, received € 100,000. The film is shot in coproduction of the Czech Repubic (Artcam Films - Artemio Benki nad Petra Oplatková), France (Petit et Petit Production), Argentina (Lome Cine) and Austria (Golden Girls Filmproduktion) and was supported by Czech Film Fund,  MEDIA Programme, CNC - avance sur recettes, INCAA and Austrian Federal Chancellary of Arts.

Synopsis:
Martin P. is a young Argentinean piano virtuoso and composer, who has been since his breakdown four years ago a patient of El Borda, the largest and the most notable but also controversial psychiatric hospital in Latin America. The child prodigy and the most promising talent of his generation is now trying to find a way how to overcome his mental disease and come back to life outside the walls of the asylum and on the concert stages while working on his new composition Enfermaria. Fugue tells a unique, yet universal story about the obsession with perfection and creation, narrating the evolution of a human being who draws his strength from his own fragility.

FREM
Documentary Frem directed by Viera Čákanyová is shot in coproduction of the Czech Republic and Slovakia and received  € 53,000. Film is produced by Hypermarket Film (Nina Numankadić), coproduced by Punkchart films (Ivan Ostrochovský, SK) and Czech Television. The film was supported by the Czech Film Fund, Slovak Audiovisual Fund and Creative Europe - MEDIA.

Synopsis:
Frem is a documentary essay, a requiem for the vanishing species of Homo sapiens. Through the stories of three protagonists, it is mapping the situation before the turning point, the last period when we are still human; in the old, nostalgic sense of the word. What are the attributes that characterize us and what are the motivations of people who want to change them and take them to the next level?

PARKING
Feature film Parking directed by Romanian director Tudor Giurgiu received € 250,000. The film is shot in coproduction of Romania (Libra Film Productions), Spain (Tito Clint Movies) and the Czech Republic (Evolution Films). It is the fourth feature-length film by Tudor Giurgiu, whose previous title Why Me? was premiered internationally at the Berlinale in 2015.

Synopsis:
Adrian is a Romanian poet, who immigrated illegally to Spain in 2002. Rafael, a second-hand car dealer offers him a night guard job at his auto dealership. During the rituals of the magical night of San Juan, Adrian’s life changes forever when he meets Maria, a Spanish woman, and bass player in a jazz band, married to Javier. They fall in love, but Adrian never tells Maria he is also married back home in Romania. 
Rafael is torn between bankruptcy and his divorce, but he finds a new girlfriend, Maria-Eugenia. Adrian and Maria-Eugenia become good friends and they try hard to prevent Rafael’s drifting. They all run for love and understanding. They all make mistakes. They fight against the evidence.
