The term Dalai Lama means “Ocean of Wisdom.” The 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, is not only Tibet’s foremost spiritual leader but also one of the most prominent figures in the contemporary world. The documentary Ocean of Wisdom brings together footage filmed with the Dalai Lama between 1991 and 2022, conveying his important and inspiring message on secular ethics, non-religious spirituality, the cultivation of inner peace and loving-kindness, and the transformation of education through a greater emphasis on inner values and working with the mind and emotions. The film also outlines the Dalai Lama’s life story, complemented by memories shared by his mother. Visually, the film unfolds as a sweeping fresco of Tibet, portraying both its landscape and its people. It takes viewers to the country’s most significant sites and offers glimpses of unique, rarely seen and almost unknown rituals and celebrations.
